THE PREDICTION

This match looks a strong candidate for five sets on Sunday between in-form Alexander Shevchenko, making his Grand Slam debut here in Paris, and Oscar Otte, who set a career-high ATP world ranking of 36th last summer off the back of some lung-busting results at majors. 29-year-old Otte is currently ranked outside the top 100 after a poor second half to last season but the German has produced plenty of lasting memories at Grand Slams since a five-set defeat to Alexander Zverev here two years ago. Otte’s first three Grand Slam results all went the distance, including a thrilling defeat to Andy Murray at Wimbledon, and he took that confidence into a remarkable run to the round of 16 at the US Open later in 2021. A 5-10 record for 2023 does not bode well for his chances here, though, against 22-year-old Shevchenko as the Russian comes into Paris at a career-high ATP world ranking of 84th. Shevchenko has won two Challenger titles this season, including one on clay in Madrid, and his winning streak in the Spanish capital needed Daniil Medvedev to end it in three sets in the third round.

It has taken top 20 opposition to beat Shevchenko on clay on tour this season so back him to edge through this likely marathon match to win outright or consider a one-off on five sets.
