Tommy Paul has played just two clay court events over the past month. He competed in the Houston Open as the top seed but fell to a three set defeat against compatriot Jensen Brooksby in the semi-finals despite holding a match point. He then competed in Madrid and began his campaign with an impressive 7-6 7-6 victory over Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, saving set points in both sets.
Paul followed that up with a battling three set win over Karen Khachanov but fell at the next stage to Jack Draper, losing 6-2 6-2 in the fourth-round. Roberto Bautista Agut will be his opponent in Rome after the Spanish veteran produced one of his best displays of the season to defeat home boy and recent Madrid Open quarter-finalist Matteo Arnaldi 6-4 6-3.
Bautista Agut will take confidence from that win but the 37-year-old has still had a poor season by his standards. Paul had a great run in Rome last year as he reached the semi-finals. We favour the American beginning his campaign with a straight sets win.
