Sebastian Ofner made it through to the next round after his opponent Roberto Carballes Baena was forced to retire midway through their match. The Austrian had taken the first set 6-3 before the Spaniard decided to withdraw.
Ofner will now take on Frances Tiafoe. The American fell to a loss in the fourth-round of Madrid to unseeded Matteo Arnaldi after breezing through his opening two matches. Tiafoe only took one out of a possible seven break point opportunities as he lost 6-3 7-5.
He did make a final at the beginning of last month on clay in Houston but then lost in the second-round of both Monte-Carlo and Barcelona. The American’s game isn’t quite firing on the surface, but he still has the quality to make a deep run in Rome.
Tiafoe leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a dominant victory over Ofner in the second-round of the US Open in 2023, but this will be their first encounter on clay.
The Austrian is clearly heading in the right direction after his time out due to injury, but Tiafoe’s all-action style should have too much for him.
