THE PREDICTION

World number 46 Alexei Popyrin grabbed one of the best results of his career with a straight-sets victory over defending champion Andrey Rublev on Wednesday. The 24-year-old claimed his second ATP title on clay at the Umag Open last summer to prove his credentials on the surface, beating former champion Stan Wawrinka in the final, and a run to the last 16 in Rome almost a year ago further attests to his surprising comfort in these conditions.

Aussie number one Alex de Minaur came back from a set down to oust a tough force in Tallon Griekspoor on Wednesday, backing up a consummate victory over the aforementioned Wawrinka. The world number 11 is yet to win a clay-court title, with his eight so far shared across hard and grass courts, but he grew up honing his craft on the Barcelona clay to bring plenty of experience into this intriguing clash. The pair share a tight 1-1 head-to-head that makes this first meeting on clay a very tough call, particularly after Popyrin’s efforts, but back De Minaur to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable quarter-finalists.
