THE PREDICTION

Defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since the covid-19 pandemic after a round of 16 exit to Taylor Fritz at the Australian Open last month, having finished runner-up the previous year. The 25-year-old’s departure from the top 10 means it is the first time since the start of the Open Era that no player in the top 10 has a single-handed backhand and perhaps that is telling of the Greek’s recent woes, with the refusal to change some aspects of his coaching set-up but an almost monthly experiment on some technical part of his game.

World number 72 Aleksandar Vukic should not be able to beat the former number three but with Tsitsipas coming in cold from Melbourne, and losing alongside his brother in the first round of the doubles, there may never be a better chance. 27-year-old Vukic beat wildcard Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez in two tight tiebreaks on Tuesday to suggest he is not up to the speed required here but it was not long ago that the Aussie enjoyed the form of his career, stunning both Borna Coric and Sebastian Korda at the Cincinnati Masters. The uninspiringly sensible call is backing Tsitsipas to win outright here so consider taking Vukic to snatch at least a set or leaving this match alone altogether.

TIP: STEFANOS TSITSIPAS TO WIN
