World number 45 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina dropped the first set of a tricky opener with the retuning Borna Coric on Thursday before rallying well to win in three. The 22-year-old is at his best on the clay, with a stunning run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last season for proof, but he is already renowned for his gutsy performances across the surfaces.
DENIS SHAPOVALOV
World number 13 Denis Shapovalov won the ATP Cup at the start of the season alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime as a spirited Team Canada. That form certainly looks to have pushed his compatriot on further but Shapovalov has remained his frustrating, raw self so far. The 22-year-old stunned Alexander Zverev in three sets at the Australian Open before taking eventual champion Rafael Nadal to five sets in the quarter-finals but since then he has lost to three players ranked outside the top 50.
THE PREDICTION
Do not include this match in an accumulator, nor, frankly, any match involving world number 13 Denis Shapovalov. The charismatic Canadian is probably the most unpredictable player on the ATP tour with a penchant for highlight-reels and big-game environments that often costs him as much as rewards him on the biggest stages. A run to the semi-finals of Wimbledon last season and the quarter-finals this year, losing to the eventual champions of each in Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, is proof of what he is capable but it is never clear which version of the 22-year-old will start a new tournament. At his best, he should be taking this clash against a great young player like Davidovich Fokina in two but there is more than a scent of the upset around this first meeting. Take at least a tiebreak here, with four of Shapovalov’s last five sets going to one and each of ADF’s last two matches seeing at least one, to leave the result up to chance.
