THE PREDICTION

World number 29 Karen Khachanov got off to a shaky start in his opening match of the new season but still managed to come through in three sets against Steve Johnson. The 25-year-old can be much better than his current ranking and whilst his career-high eighth might be out of reach for now it should be sooner rather than later that he re-joins the top 20. 29-year-old Egor Gerasimov set a career-high 65 almost two years ago and the Belarussian should be targeting a renaissance of his own after a disappointing 2021. A straight-sets victory over fifth seed Marton Fucsovics in the first round is impressive fare but Khachanov has won both of their meetings so far in straight sets including at last year’s Wimbledon. The Russian should take this in two but an outright win is the sensible move here.
