THE PREDICTION

World number 14 Denis Shapovalov made the semi-finals of Wimbledon back in July for a best-ever run at a Grand Slam but his form since that achievement left much to be desired. The 22-year-old will always be a threat but it will be fascinating to see if he can finally develop more consistency in 2022. Here in Abu Dhabi he faces world number 23 Taylor Fritz for a fifth time in their careers, leading the 24-year-old 4-1 in their head-to-head record. Fritz ended the season in superb form after a poor start to 2021 and were this match taking place last month the American would be the favourite to win. A long break might have done Shapovalov the world of good whilst negatively affecting Fritz momentum but a win apiece this year suggests this match could go to three sets. Take that option, or for the more consistent Fritz to win at least a set, and leave the winner up to chance.
