THE PREDICTION
Pierre-Hugues Herbert enjoyed a little run of form in the singles side of the draw after the resumption of the ATP tour in late August, notably doing a quick double over Tennys Sandgren, but the Frenchman has lost to his first opponent of 2021 on five previous occasions. David Goffin endured a covid-19 affected resumption to the ATP tour and will have needed this winter break more than anyone. The 30-year-old reached the round of 16 at the US Open before going on a run of now four straight defeats and it will be interesting to see how well he starts the new year after that form. Now 30 years old, Goffin is likely to be one of the players slowly drifting back from his perennial top 10 places for the influx of younger talent unless he can regain a cutting edge we have not seen for some time. Here, though, his 100% record over Herbert should see him over the line in straight sets.
