THE LOWDOWN
HEAD-TO-HEAD
Last meeting: N/A
RAFAEL NADAL
- Rafael Nadal will be in for quite the key change with his first match following his semi-final with Roger Federer at Wimbledon last month, to whom he lost in four elite sets.
- 33-year-old Nadal is the reigning champion of the Rogers Cup after a straight-sets victory over a Stefanos Tsitsipas on the rise last year and that was his fourth Montreal title.
- The Spaniard is gearing up to fight for a fourth US Open title after his disappointing injury in the semi-finals last year where he retired after the second set against Juan Martin del Potro.
DAN EVANS
- 29-year-old Dan Evans got past two qualifying rounds and Australian youngster Alex de Minaur in the first round to set up his first meeting with world number two Rafael Nadal.
- Evans continues to fight back towards his career-high 41 in the ATP world rankings after an excellent Wimbledon campaign and reaching the quarter-finals of the Atlanta Open.
- This is Evans’ first outing at the Rogers Cup in Montreal as he gears up for just his third US Open appearance hoping to emulate his success in Florida earlier this year when he finished runner-up at the hard-court Delray Beach Open.
THE PREDICTION
Reigning Rogers Cup champion Rafael Nadal is the model professional and so there is no chance of him taking his eyes off the prize following his second consecutive semi-final exit at Wimbledon last month. However, he will face a tricky opponent in Dan Evans who knows just how to exploit the weaknesses of the players he faces and was in his peak form last month at SW19. Whether or not Nadal has any weaknesses is another matter. The Spaniard has not been beaten in his first match at a tournament since Shanghai in 2016, but Evans does have what it takes to cause him problems throughout a hard-fought Nadal victory here.
