ALEX PEREIRA VS JAMAHAL HILL LOWDOWN

Alex Pereira (9-2) headlines the blockbuster card making the first defence of his light heavyweight crown. That crown has been on a merry-go-round since Jiri Prochazka submitted Glover Teixeira in a war. Prochazka nobly vacated the throne due to a nasty shoulder injury and by the time he recovered the throne was empty once again allowing him to duke it out with Periera back in November. It took two rounds for the new king to be crowned with Periera collecting his seventh knockout and second UFC belt.

Jamahal Hill (12-1) took over from Prochazka in January last year stepping up on short notice to outpoint Teixeira for the vacant title. That capped an incredible four-fight win streak which included knockouts over Jimmy Crute, Johnny Walker and Thiago Santos all in 2022. However, it was then Hill’s turn to suffer a heartbreaking injury, tearing his achilles in a basketball game and forcing him to make way for a new champion.

ALEX PEREIRA VS JAMAHAL HILL PREDICTION

Nobody saw this fight headlining the UFC 300 card a year ago, but this is a mouthwatering matchup. They are elite strikers with knockout power, and they will stand and trade until someone falls.

They are both at the top of the food chain when it comes to striking. They are cerebral, set traps and deadly from range. Pereira has elite kickboxing whereas Hill has more variety with his attacks and is dangerous with all eight limbs.

Hill will look to set up his left hand and head kick from his southpaw stance. However, he will need to be more concerned with what comes his way. Pereira can disable that lead right leg with just a couple kicks. He does not telegraph them which he will use to distract Hill and create an opening for his left hook.

Pereira’s defence has holes which Hill can certainly exploit, but the Brazilian's offence is hard to ignore. He is arguably the most dangerous striker in the UFC and his striking experience engulfs Hill’s.

Where Hill has the edge is his grappling. It is the champ's glaring weakness and Hill has the ability to take him down. He also has a very dangerous clinch and we expect him to try and tie Pereira up at some point and launch knees to the gut and jaw. However, we can see Hill having the ego to try hunt the knockout which will only favour Pereira.

Beating a two-division champion in his prime coming off serious achilles surgery will be the most impressive feat of the year. So, it is hard to back Hill with any confidence.

Prediction: Pereira via KO/TKO
