Gael Monfils returns to action after some time out following the injury he picked up in the Australian Open that forced him to retire against Ben Shelton. He was enjoying a superb tournament in Melbourne as he beat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Daniel Altmaier and Taylor Fritz before the withdrawal.
Prior to that tournament, he won the ASB Classic in Auckland and has been playing some of his best tennis for quite some time. He will be hoping he has not lost any momentum as he returns in Dubai.
He has been handed a tough first-round match as he meets Italian Matteo Berrettini in Dubai. The 28-year-old picked up his first-ever win over Novak Djokovic last week in Qatar before eventually being knocked out in a three-set battle with Jack Draper in the quarter-finals.
The pair have met three times before and Matteo Berrettini won all three matches. Two of those came in Grand Slam events and each of them went five sets. It would be no surprise if this one went all three sets but we have to favour Berrettini based on activity and recent form.
