THE LOWDOWN

GALATASARAY

Galatasaray will be hoping that home advantage and the cacophony of deafening support expected for them in Istanbul will spur them on to what would be a priceless three points here in the race for to finish in the top two of Group A. Although the Turkish giants are coming off the back of consecutive defeats at the hands of runaway group leaders Bayern Munich, four points gained in their opening two matches leaves them trailing second-placed Copenhagen on goal difference only.

When taking into account that Galatasaray already boast a famous win over Man Utd at Old Trafford, belief that they can gain the positive result needed here will be high. Experienced and proven European campaigners such as Mauro Icardi and Dries Mertens will be crucial, as will ex Man Utd player Wilfried Zaha.

MAN UTD

For half-an-hour it all looked so good for Man Utd away in Copenhagen, two goals up and cruising to three points. But the sending off of Marcus Rashford changed everything and their opponents wiped out the deficit before half-time. A thrilling second-half saw Erik ten Hag’s side retake the lead from the penalty spot before another Copenhagen comeback condemned them to a devastating 4-3 defeat.

The loss leaves United bottom of Group A and realistically needing to win in Istanbul with Bayern Munich waiting in the final round of group games. They do travel to Turkey though on the back of an impressive 0-3 Premier League triumph against Everton, which will be remembered for an amazing goal from Alejandro Garnacho which will live long in the memory of all who witnessed it.

THE TEAM NEWS

GALATASARAY

After missing Galatasaray’s third Group A fixture, first-choice goalkeeper Fernando Muslera returns to the side for this vital contest. Centre-back Davison Sanchez will miss out though after sustaining an injury at the weekend, with Victor Nelsson likely to replace him

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Muslera; Boey, Nelsson, Bardakci, Angelino; Ayhan, Torreira; Akturkoglu, Mertens, Zaha; Icardi

UNAVAILABLE: Sanchez (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

MAN UTD

Rasmus Hojlund missed the Red Devils’ victory over Everton with an injury and is a doubt for this game. It would be a huge blow if United were without Hojland, who boasts five goals across the group stage so far. Combine that with Marcus Rashford’s suspension and Erik ten Hag will be missing a significant portion of attacking firepower.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Onana; Dalot, Maguire, Lindelof, Shaw; McTominay; Mainoo; Antony, Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund

UNAVAILABLE: Evans (Injured), Martinez (Injured), Malacia (Injured), Casemiro (Injured), Eriksen (Injured), Mount (Injured), Rashford (Suspended)

QUESTIONABLE: Antony (Fitness), Hojlund (Injured)

THE KEY STATS

  • Galatasaray are unbeaten in their previous three UEFA club competition matches at home against Man. United (W1 D2).
  • Galatasaray’s two defeats against Bayern are their only two defeats in their previous ten UEFA club competition matches this season (W6 D2).
  • Galatasaray have scored in each of their last 11 UEFA club competition matches.
  • Man. United have won only one of their last eight Champions League matches away from home (D2 L5).
  • A defeat for Man Utd would see them lose four matches in the Champions League group stage for the first time,
  • Man Utd have scored in each of their last 19 Champions League group stage matches.
  • Rasmus Hojlund has scored five goals in the UEFA Champions League this season. Nicklas Bendtner is the only Danish player to have previously scored five in a Champions League campaign (5 for Arsenal in 2009/10).

THE PREDICTION

The prize for winning this game is so high that neither Galatasaray not Man Utd are expected to sit back and play for a draw, with an extremely attacking encounter more than likely on the cards. Most Champions League fixtures involving Man Utd this campaign have been full of entertainment at both ends of the pitch with over 3.5 goals scored in all bar one of those matches. The outcome itself is hard to call, with Galatasaray boasting home advantage and a very good record against their opponents in Turkey, but Man Utd are coming off the back of an excellent performance at the weekend. Either way, goals should be on the menu from either side, so backing both teams to score has to be favoured.
