THE LOWDOWN

ATLETICO MADRID

It has been a really disappointing campaign for Atletico Madrid after what was believed to be an important transitional campaign, moving from one defensive and pragmatic, cautious style of football to a more aggressive and front foot approach that is perhaps more suited to their current personnel.

However, in the second-half of the campaign they have lost in the semi-finals of both the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana, lost the first-leg of this Round of 16 tie against Internazionale and their 2-0 loss at a Cadiz side that were winless in over six months last weekend means their spot in the top four is under immense threat.

INTER MILAN

Unlike Atletico, Internazionale do have a reactive style but there is an effectiveness and efficiency that has helped them identify and perfect a supremely balanced style of football. The Nerazzurri are the champions-elect in Italy with a 17-point lead at the top-of-the-table as they close in on their 20th Scudetto and second star on the badge.

Inter’s most recent outing saw them edge past Bologna by a goal to nil at the Renato Dall’Ara with a 37th minute winning goal from Yann Bisseck. Inter have now enjoyed 13 successive victories across all competitions as they try and complete a historic season and the genuine possibility of winning the double.

THE TEAM NEWS

ATLETICO MADRID

Atletico Madrid have several key injury issues for this weekend with both Jose Maria Gimenez and Cesar Azpilicueta both unavailable. Thomas Lemar and Antoine Griezmann are both out injured, too, whilst midfielder Pablo Barrios is a doubt.

QUESTIONABLE: Barrios (Injured)

INTER MILAN

Carlos Augusto is unavailable for Inter this weekend but he is not alone with several other absentees for the visit to the Spanish capital as Stefano Sensi, Juan Cuadrado and the first-leg match winner Marko Arnautovic all also set to be missing.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Sommer; Bisseck, Acerbi, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Martinez

UNAVAILABLE: Arnautovic (Injured), Augusto (Injured), Sensi (Injured), Cuadrado (Injured)

THE KEY STATS

  • Atlético have lost only two of their last 28 UEFA club competition matches in their own stadium (W17 D9).
  • Atlético have won their previous three UEFA Champions League home games this season.
  • Atlético are unbeaten in their last 16 UEFA Champions League knockout round matches in their own stadium (W9 D7) since a 3-2 defeat against Ajax in the 1996/97 quarter-finals.
  • Atlético have won seven of their last nine UEFA competition matches at home against Italian teams (D1 L1).
  • Atlético have kept a clean sheet in six of their last nine UEFA competition matches at home against Italian teams.
  • Inter have lost only one of their last 14 UEFA Champions League matches (W8 D5).
  • Inter have kept seven clean sheets in their last nine UEFA Champions League knockout stage matches.
  • Inter have lost the second leg in only two of their last 13 UEFA competition two-legged ties (W8 D3).
  • Inter are unbeaten in their last five UEFA competition matches against Spanish teams (W2 D3).
  • Inter are without a win in their last ten UEFA competition matches away from home against Spanish teams (D3 L7).
  • Inter have won 42 of the 46 UEFA competition ties in which they have recorded a first leg victory at home.

THE PREDICTION

The first-leg between these two would on paper suggest a typical, low-scoring, tight, tense and nervy European knockout affair. However, that is not how it played out on the pitch, despite the score line, with Inter overwhelmingly better than Atletico in almost every department and they are also in far better form. It would be really surprising if Inter didn’t at least score at the Metropolitano and they are the team to back for this second-leg.

TIP: DOUBLE CHANCE – INTER TO WIN OR DRAW
