THE LOWDOWN
SEVILLA
During the March international break, Sevilla were in the bottom three and the relegation places. They replaced Jorge Sampaoli with Jose Luis Mendilibar and then managed to go on to win the UEFA Europa League with victories against Manchester United, Juventus and Roma whilst also propelling themselves into the middle-of-the-table at the same time.
Once again, though, they have struggled domestically and they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting rock-bottom in the table. They have been beaten by Valencia, Alaves and Girona before being saved from defeat at Atletico Madrid by a weather-related postponement. Mendilibar is under pressure in Andalusia as they face newly-promoted opposition this weekend.
LAS PALMAS
Under the management of former Barcelona youth coach Garcia Pimienta, Las Palmas managed to return to La Liga this season after finishing second in the Segunda and gaining automatic promotion last year. The Canary Islanders often contend with the cliché and stereotype of being the ‘Brazilians of Spanish football’ with an open and aggressive style of football but that very much is the case with this Las Palmas side.
Despite that, though, the visitors have started the season slowly. They were held to a 1-1 draw by Real Mallorca on the opening day of the campaign before being beaten by a late penalty in Valencia. Since then they have shared a goalless draw with Real Sociedad before then being edged out by a goal to nil in Catalonia against high-flying Girona.
THE TEAM NEWS
SEVILLA
Jose Luis Mendilibar, coming under increasing pressure, is without some huge players, especially defensively, with Jesus Navas, Marcos Acuna, Marcao and Tanguy Nianzou all out injured.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Dmitrovic; Gattoni, Bade, Gudelj, Pedrosa; Sow, Rakitic; Suso, Oliver, Ocampos; En-Nesyri
UNAVAILABLE: Navas (Injured), Acuna (Injured), Marcao (Injured), Nianzou (Injured), Pastor (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Gomez (Injured)
LAS PALMAS
Garcia Pimienta is missing two summer signings in Marvin Park and Daley Sinkgraven, as well as two other important players being doubts with Sandro Ramirez and Alberto Moleiro uncertain to be fit.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Valles; Araujo, Suarez, Marmol, Cardona; Loiodice, Rodriguez; Pejino, Viera, Munir; Kaba
UNAVAILABLE: Gonzalez (Injured), Park (Injured), Sinkgraven (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Ramirez (Injured), Moleiro (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Sevilla have started the season really, really poorly and could be set for another relegation battle. Coming into this one against winless newly-promoted opposition, they will expect to get off the mark but they have four defenders who, arguably, would make up their best possible back four, all out injured. Las Palmas haven’t scored since their opening day 1-1 draw with Mallorca and if they ever were to do so it would be against such out-of-form opposition lacking any sort of defence. Both teams scoring looks a good bet for this one in the heat of Andalusia.
