THE PREDICTION

Andoni Iraola’s home team come into this on the back of a terrible run of form. Off-field controversy won’t have helped the on-field results and performances of Rayo Vallecano but it really could be a terrible end to the campaign for Rayo. In the first-half of the season, they were the surprise package in La Liga. Even then, though, they were heavily reliant on their near perfect home record. Since that form at Vallecas has dissipated, and their away form has failed to improve, they fear a genuine relegation battle - despite having collected 30 points by January. They come into this on the back of six successive defeats and they are winless in their last eight matches; the whole of 2022 - a run of form in which they have managed to score just two league goals. In over a third of Sevilla’s matches under Julen Lopetegui, since the former Spain and Real Madrid manager was appointed in the summer of 2019, have finished by Sevilla winning to nil. That is a simply incredible record. The Andalusians love a 1-0 or 2-0 scoreline and they come into this on the back of a 1-0 victory at home to West Ham United in the first-leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie in midweek. An issue, though, is a tendency to lean into that conservatism a touch too much. Their goalless draw against relegation-threatened Alaves last weekend being a good case study of that. They have managed just 39 goals in 27 La Liga games as they cling onto the title race. They will need to win this to stay in that title race, just about, and a low-scoring Sevilla win to nil looks a good bet for that, given the aforementioned records of both sides.
