THE LOWDOWN

MALLORCA

Javier Aguirre is coming under pressure in the Balearic Islands as Real Mallorca continue to struggle down at the bottom end of the 2023/24 La Liga table. They have managed just one win in their 14 matches so far this season as they sit just a couple of points outside of the bottom three and the relegation places.

Mallorca come into this one on the back of a 1-1 draw at home to Cadiz in a rearranged game that was postponed prior to the November international break. Aguirre’s reactive and defensive style of football is even more lacking cutting edge this season with the sale of Lee Kang-in and an injury to Vedat Muriqi.

ALAVES

Luis Garcia Plaza remains just about in charge of Deportivo Alaves and he was coming under serious pressure with the Basque club languishing down towards the bottom end of the table before a much-needed victory last weekend. Following promotion last season, Alaves have managed four wins with three draws and seven defeats in their 14 matches so far

That aforementioned much-needed victory saw them defeat Granada by three goals to nil. They went into the November international break with a slender 1-0 defeat of another struggling side, Almeria, before losing 2-1 to Barcelona a week later, despite having a half-team lead in that match in Catalonia.

THE PREDICTION

These are two of the more tactically reactive sides in Spain’s top-flight but we could get a surprise thriller at Son Moix this weekend. Mallorca are desperate for a second win of the season and failing to win at home against last season’s playoff winners will be deeply concerning. Alaves, on the other hand, put in three in the first-half against Granada last weekend and will fancy their chances of harming a Mallorca side lacking defensive numbers. Both teams scoring looks like a good value bet for this one in Palma.

BETTING TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
