THE LOWDOWN

GIRONA

Girona were extremely entertaining last season and they have maintained that tag of the entertainers but combined it with genuine effectiveness as they mount an extremely unlikely title challenge. They are leading the league with the most points any team has ever had in La Liga after 13 matches of the campaign.

Girona have picked up 11 victories, only dropping points away to Real Sociedad with a 1-1 draw on the opening day of the season and with a loss at home to Real Madrid in October. The Catalans come into this on the back of a 2-1 win away at Rayo Vallecano before the break. They are also the league’s top scorers with 31 goals so far this season.

ATHLETIC BILBAO

Despite their ‘cantera’ policy, Athletic Club remain an ambitious club and will be aiming to finish in the top seven and earn European qualification this season. The Basque side begin the return to action after the November international break sitting fifth in the table after a dramatic victory before the two-week stoppage.

Athletic pulled off a thrilling 4-3 victory at home to Celta Vigo a couple of weeks ago with Iago Aspas missing a late penalty for the Galicians at 3-3 before Alex Berenguer scored a 98th minute winning penalty. That victory followed a 3-2 win against Villarreal and they have suffered just two defeats in their last 13 matches across all competitions since an opening day loss to Real Madrid.

THE PREDICTION

Girona have been exceptional throughout the campaign and are probably the standout story in European football at the moment. With their aforementioned 31 goals, they have also conceded 16 so they are league leaders with an average of 3.62 goals per game so far. They face an Athletic side that have been a lot more proactive in attack this season, as seen by their 4-3 defeat of Celta the other week. This one could well be a bit of a Monday night thriller between two good, easy on the eye teams.
