THE LOWDOWN
GIRONA
Following promotion to La Liga in 2022 via the playoffs. Girona produced an entertaining season in which they scored more than 15 teams but also conceded more than 16. They narrowly missed out on a top seven finish and European qualification with things expected to decline this year after the loss of the likes of Santiago Bueno, Oriol Romeo and Valentin Castellanos.
However, despite those departures, they have arguably improved upon that. After beginning with a 1-1 draw away to Real Sociedad on the opening day of the season, Michel’s Catalans then went on a six-match winning streak before being beaten by Real Madrid at the start of this month. They followed that up, though, by bouncing back with a win against Cadiz a couple of weeks ago.
ALMERIA
In 2022, Almeria gained promotion back to the top-flight after their fairly heavy transfer investment by owner, Turk Al-Sheikh. They avoided relegation on the final day of last season but the sale of forward El Bilal Toure to Atalanta means they are expected to be struggling, once again, down at the bottom end of La Liga.
In their penultimate match before the October international break, Almeria had a 3-0 lead at half-time against Andalusian rivals Granada but gave up that lead in the second-half. That is a good representation of their miserable start to the season as they sit rock-bottom after nine matches with no victories so far this season.

Girona do have quite a few injury concerns for this weekend’s visit of Almeria with the likes of Bernardo Espinosa and Borja Garcia both out injured.

THE PREDICTION
The perceived notion is that Girona will surely, at some stage, fall away. The over arching goal for them would have surely been to avoid relegation but they are already pretty much more than half way there. They come into this one against the only winless team left in the division and with home advantage. Girona winning top-flight matches shouldn’t be a foregone conclusion but it really does feel as though, especially with a home game against Celta next week, they could cement a top four spot in these early stages.
