THE LOWDOWN

BARCELONA

Xavi’s Barcelona begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting in the top four of La Liga but they are consistently dropping points with performances accompanying that dip in results by being simply below par. The Catalans came from behind to defeat Porto by two goals to one in midweek continue their run of underwhelming showings.

They are four points adrift of Real Madrid, who sit level on points with Girona at the top-of-the-table. The Blaugrana have put in some extremely impressive attacking displays at stages this season but the lack of consistency is a concern with 12 of their 27 goals in the league coming in three successive matches in September, making it just 15 in the other 11 either side.

ATLETICO MADRID

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid continued their impressive form, in all competitions, with a comfortable and impressive 3-1 defeat of Feyenoord at De Kuip in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League, during the week. Los Rojiblancos have a game-in-hand on the top two, Real Madrid and Girona, as they sit four points off them ahead of this weekend.

Their goal scoring form is something that has taken many by surprise as Simeone’s style of play, known as ‘Cholismo’, has gained a reputation for being dogged, aggressive and typically defensive. However, in their 18 matches across La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, Atletico have scored 45 goals.

THE TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

Marc-Andre ter Stegen remains a doubt for this weekend and so is on-loan full-back, Joao Cancelo, whilst Gavi is a doubt for the visit of Atletico.

ATLETICO MADRID

After the squad has been injury ravaged for much of the campaign, Thomas Lemar is now the only unavailable first-teamer for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Oblak; Azpilicueta, Witsel, Hermoso; Llorente, De Paul, Koke, Lino; Correa, Griezmann; Morata

THE PREDICTION

There is a real chance that Barcelona get put out of the title race this weekend. They are lacking so much at the moment with pressure growing on Xavi as underwhelming but fortunate performances and results last season have not been sorted and there is such a disconnect and lack of cohesion that any side in good form with genuine attacking talent and depth will give them a run for their money. Atletico fall into that category and Diego Simeone’s men are the value bet for this one.
