THE LOWDOWN

ATLETICO MADRID

There is the potential that this is the final month of Diego Simeone’s reign at Atletico Madrid and Los Rojiblancos could well finish the season with a bit of a flop. They were beaten by Athletic in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and have since suffered a very frustrating UEFA Champions League quarter-final exit to Borussia Dortmund.

Atletico have underwhelmed in La Liga of late but they do just about remain in the top four and the UEFA Champions League spots for the time being. Their 2-0 loss up in the Basque Country against Deportivo Alaves last weekend means they have now managed seven victories in their last 16 matches across all competitions.

ATHLETIC BILBAO

Coached by former Barcelona boss, Athletic Club have enjoyed a really impressive campaign whereby they have once again punched above their weight. The Basque club begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting three points behind Atletico and can leapfrog the capital city club into the top four if they manage to defeat them at the Metropolitano.

Combined with their impressive La Liga form, they also won a trophy a few weeks ago as they defeated Real Mallorca on penalties in the final of the Copa del Rey at La Cartuja in Seville. Athletic come into this on the back of back-to-back 1-1 draws against Granada and Villarreal since their cup final victory.

ATHLETIC BILBAO

There are several key defensive issues for Athletic as both Aitor Paredes and Yuri Berchiche are out injured, whilst Oscar de Marcos is missing through suspension.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Simon; Prados, Yeray, Vivian, Lekue; Ruiz de Galarreta, Gomez; I. Williams, Sancet, N. Williams; Guruzeta

THE PREDICTION

We could have an absolute thriller at the Metropolitano this weekend. Atletico Madrid remain a good side and will be aiming to finish the season on a high but their lack of consistency and trustworthiness really does make this one another really tough encounter. Athletic will take the game to a fallible and a team lacking defensive cohesion but will surely still create enough to hurt their opposition. In what could bee a top four decider, an entertaining encounter for the neutral in which both teams score looks a good bet.

TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
