THE LOWDOWN

UDINESE

Under the management of Andrea Sottil, Udinese went on a six-match winning streak in the early stages of last season, seemingly making them contenders for the European spots. However, they fell away quite badly and ended up finishing in the bottom-half, managing just five victories in their final 30 matches of the 2022/23 Serie A season.

The Friulians, based on that record, could easily be argued to be one of the weaker sides in the division this season with some supporter unrest over the Pozzo ownership regime. They have started this season by collecting just three points from their opening four matches of the season and they are still winless after a goalless draw in Sardinia against Cagliari last weekend.

FIORENTINA

Last season Fiorentina reached the finals of both the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Europa Conference League. Whilst, under the management of the exciting Vincenzo Italiano, there is always the expectation to improve, I Viola lost key players such as Igor and Sofyan Amrabat to Premier League sides over the summer transfer window.

The visitors come into this on the back of yet another entertaining clash as they shared a 2-2 draw with Genk in the group stages of the UEFA Europa Conference League in midweek. They defeated Atalanta by three goals to two last weekend and have started the 2023/24 Serie A campaign with seven points collected in their four matches.

THE TEAM NEWS

UDINESE

Andrea Sottil is without lots of key players for this weekend’s encounter with defender Christian Kabasele the latest to be missing for the Friulians due to injury.

PREDICTED XI (3-5-2): Silvestri; Perez, Bijol, Guessand; Ebosse, Samardzic, Walace, Lovric, Kamara; Lucca, Thauvin

UNAVAILABLE: Kabasele (Injured), Ebosele (Injured), Brenner (Injured), Masina (Injured), Deulofeu (Injured), Ehizibue (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

FIORENTINA

Vincenzo Italiano will have to continue to deal with long-term absentees Gaetano Castrovilli and Yerry Mina, as well as Argentine forward Nicolas Gonzalez.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Christensen; Dodo, Milenkovic, Ranieri, Biraghi; Arthur, Mandragora; Nzola, Bonaventura, Kouame; Beltran

UNAVAILABLE: Gonzalez (Injured), Castrovilli (Injured), Mina (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Pierozzi (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Udinese have been among the very weakest, if not the weakest, sides in Italian football for nearly 12 months now and that has continued this season. They, along with Cagliari, Salernitana and Empoli, remain winless after four matches so far. They face a Fiorentina team that have suffered just one defeat in all competitions and that came against the so far ruthless Inter. I Viola’s four matches have consisted of 18 goals so they may well win but are also likely to concede in Italy’s north east.

TIP: FIORENTINA TO WIN & BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
