THE LOWDOWN

SALERNITANA

After gaining promotion to the top-flight in 2021, Salernitana avoided admistrative relegation on New Years’ Eve that year with Lazio owner Claudio Lotito having to sell the club. They then performed a miraculous escape under Davide Nicola but the miracle worker was sacked last season with Paulo Sousa leading them into this campaign.

The former Portugal manager has already been sacked as Salernitana boss, being replaced by former AC Milan striker, Filippo Inzaghi, ahead of this weekend’s round of fixtures. They sit firmly in the bottom three and the relegation places after suffering five defeats with three draws in their opening eight matches of the season.

CAGLIARI

Last season, Cagliari won promotion back to Serie A at the first attempt, winning the Serie B playoffs over two legs against Bari. Claudio Ranieri, in charge of the club, decided to stay on and lead them into the top-flight. After a frustrating summer transfer window, it has been a very tough start to the season but Ranieri remains in the dugout at the Unipol Demus.

The Sardinians come into this on the back of a 4-1 shellacking at the hands of a vulnerable Roma side in their most recent outing, a couple of weeks ago, before the break. They sit rock-bottom in the Serie A table with just two points collected, suffering six defeats, in their opening eight matches of the 2023/24 season.

THE PREDICTION

These two sides begin the ninth match day of the 2023/24 Serie A season sitting second-bottom and rock-bottom, respectively. Not only have the two sides struggled to collect points but they have also struggled for any sort of attacking threat in the final third, combining for just seven goals so far this season. This is a low quality encounter on Sunday afternoon and, regardless of whether a struggler comes out on top, it is expected to be low-scoring and a bit tough to watch for the neutral.
