Empoli have moved back to former manager Andrea Andreazzoli and that has helped their form to majorly improve as the season has gone on. They begin the return to Serie A action after the break sitting just outside of the bottom three and the relegation places. Remarkably, though, they have managed to score just five goals in 12 games so far this season.
The Florence-based club pulled off a shock a couple of weeks ago, defeating defending champions Napoli by a goal to nil with a 92nd minute winner from Ukrainian international Viktor Kovalenko. They have picked up three victories with one draw in their last seven games after starting the campaign with five successive defeats.
SASSUOLO
Alessio Dionisi remains in charge of Sassuolo but is coming under a bit of pressure as he takes his side to former club, Empoli. Sassuolo have managed just three victories, the same as Empoli, so far this season. Two of those wins have come against the top two teams in Serie A in Internazionale and Juventus in late September.
Since then, though, they have endured a seven-match winless run of form for games inside 90 minutes across all competitions, requiring a penalty shootout to defeat Serie B side Spezia in the second round of the cup in early November. They have remained entertaining, though, with eight of their 12 games featuring both teams scoring.

There is a real chance that we look back at the end of this season and this particular clash proved to be defining – and more so than it appears on the face of it ahead of the match. Empoli have, as mentioned, improved a lot in recent months but just five goals scored remains a pitiful return for any team striving to survive in Serie A. Sassuolo and Dionisi have a reputation for a fluent style of football but that style has definitely been undermined throughout the last 18 months and another stifled affair appears likely in Florence.
