THE LOWDOWN

CAGLIARI

Claudio Ranieri led Cagliari to promotion to the top-flight of Italian football last season and they were always expected to struggle this season and that is very much the case. The Sardinians begin the weekend sitting in the bottom three and the relegation places but they did enjoy some improved form just before the break.

The home team come into this on the back of a 2-1 defeat away to Juventus a couple of weeks ago, which had followed on from them collecting seven points in their previous three matches. The Sardinians had started the season without a win in their opening nine matches but came from 3-0 down in the final 15 minutes to defeat Frosinone by four goals to three.

MONZA

An ambitious club, Monza are looking to finish in the top seven this season and earn European qualification for the first time ever. They started the season slowly but now begin the weekend sitting in the top-half of the table, above the likes of Lazio, and just a point behind Roma in the aforementioned seventh placed spot.

The visitors come into this one on the back of a 1-1 draw at home to Torino in their most recent outing. That sharing of the spoils means they have now suffered just one defeat in their last nine matches in Serie A, under the management of former Juventus and Italian international winger, Raffaele Palladino.

THE TEAM NEWS

CAGLIARI

Cagliari have several injury concerns for the visit of Monza with the likes of Gaetano Oristanio, Alessandro Di Pardo and Nahitan Nandez all unavailable.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Scuffet; Zappa, Goldaniga, Dossena, Augello; Prati, Makoumbou; Jankto, Viola, Luvumbo; Petagna

UNAVAILABLE: Oristanio (Injured), Di Pardo (Injured), Nandez (Injured), Rog (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

MONZA

Alejandro Gomez remains suspended, as he will be for the next two years, whilst Gianluca Caprari and Armando Izzo are out injured.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Di Gregorio; D’Ambrosio, Caldirola, Carboni; Ciurria, Gagliardini, Bondo, Kyriakopoulos; Colpani, Pessina; Mota

UNAVAILABLE: Gomez (Suspended), Colombo (Injured), Izzo (Injured), Caprari (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: D’Alessandro (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Both of these sides enjoyed an upturn in form prior to the international break and they will both fancy their chances of continuing that improvement in this one. Cagliari have not quite been as stubborn as a typical Ranieri side but will be confident they can, especially at home, frustrate a Monza team that have managed to score just 13 goals in their opening 12 matches of the 2023/24 campaign. So, regardless of the match result, a low-scoring encounter is expected early on Sunday.
