THE LOWDOWN

AC MILAN

AC Milan relinquished their grip on the Serie A title last season when they finished fourth behind Napoli, Lazio and Inter. They were beaten in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League to city rivals Inter, too, which will leave a sour taste. They are expected to challenge and reclaim the Italian title this season.

The Rossoneri began the campaign with three successive victories before being hammered by five goals to one by Inter in the Derby della Madonnina last weekend. Stefano Pioli’s side come into this on the back of a goalless draw with Newcastle United at San Siro in the opening match of their UEFA Champions League group stage campaign.

HELLAS VERONA

At the start of last season, Serie A announced there would be an end of season playoff between teams that finish level on points in meaningful positions. Hellas Verona finished 18th, below Spezia on goal difference so the two teams had a playoff with Hellas Verona coming out on top and surving in the top-flight.

Over the summer they appointed Marco Baroni, who had gained promotion to the top-flight with Lecce in 2022 before keeping them up quite comfortably last season. Verona began the campaign with back-to-back victories but have since collected just one point from their last two matches, coming into this on the back of a goalless draw at home to Bologna.

THE PREDICTION

It has been a difficult week for AC Milan but they will be hoping to put things right this weekend. They have started the campaign generally well with just one defeat in five matches but that defeat was by such a margin it has put a bit of a cloud over their start. Hellas Verona also started well but have since regressed to a level that they are expected to be at in the middle-of-the-table. A comfortable Milan win, especially at home, is the expected outcome of this one.

TIP: MILAN TO WIN & OVER 2.5 GOALS
