THE LOWDOWN
MAN UTD
Manchester United are not very good. It is absolutely astonishing that they begin their 33rd match of the 2023/24 Premier League season sitting tucked inside the top seven and the European spots. The Red Devils are also, arguably even more astonishingly, in an FA Cup final after they defeated Championship side Coventry City on penalties.
In that game, United were 3-0 up with less than 20 minutes of the 90 to go but they threw the game away and then controversially avoided defeat with a disallowed Victor Torp goal late on in extra-time. They have managed just two victories in their last ten matches inside 90 minutes across all competitions.
SHEFFIELD UTD
If Sheffield United lose at Old Trafford this week then they will head into the final four matches of the campaign sitting ten points adrift of safety after what has been a truly miserable but predictably poor season which followed a bizarre summer transfer window. The Blades are also closing in on a century of conceded goals.
They have let in 88 in their 33 games. The Blades come into this one on the back of being thrashed 4-1 by Burnley at Bramall Lane at the weekend with Jacob Bruun Larsen and Lorenz Assignon scoring before Gustavo Hamer brought one back but then both Lyle Foster and Johann Berg Gumdundsson sealed the Clarets’ win.
THE TEAM NEWS
MAN UTD
There is a possibility that Manchester United will be without both Scott McTominay and Marcus Rashford for this week after they picked up injuries against Coventry at the weekend.
Both Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho picked up issues of their own at Wembley but they should be okay to face Sheffield United at Old Trafford.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Onana; Wan-Bissaka, Casemiro, Maguire, Dalot; Mainoo, Eriksen; Antony, Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund
UNAVAILABLE: Evans (Injured), Varane (Injured), Kambwala (Injured), Lindelof (Injured), Martinez (Injured), Shaw (Injured), Malacia (Injured), Amrabat (Injured), Mount (Injured), Martial (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: McTominay (Injured), Fernandes (Injured), Garnacho (Injured), Rashford (Injured)
SHEFFIELD UTD
Chris Wilder has been dealing with an injury ravaged squad ever since he returned to Bramall Lane back in December. The likes of Gustavo Hamer, Oli McBurnie and Rhian Brewster could return for this one, though.
However, the visitors do have several other absentees such as the likes of John Egan, Chris Basham, Jack Robinson, George Baldock and Max Lowe among others.
PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Grbic; Bogle, Ahmedhodzic, Trusty, Osborn; Vinicius Souza, Arblaster; McAtee, Hamer, Brereton Diaz; Archer
UNAVAILABLE: Egan (Injured), Basham (Injured), Robinson (Injured), Baldock (Injured), Lowe (Injured), Norrington-Davies (Injured), Davies (Injured), Jebbison (Illness)
QUESTIONABLE: Hamer (Injured), Brewster (Injured), McBurnie (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
In 45 matches across all competitions so far this season, Manchester United have managed just six victories by more than a solitary goal with two coming against lower league opposition, one against a much-changed Crystal Palace side in the EFL Cup, two against a poor Everton side in which one of those wins came with two first-half penalties and one against West Ham. Sheffield United are, though, one of the teams that will surely be comfortably and convincingly beaten by a really underwhelming United side.
TIP: MAN UTD TO WIN -1 HANDICAP
