THE LOWDOWN

MAN UTD

  • Man Utd come into this huge derby match in excellent league form, winning their last four top flight fixtures, breaking into the top four in the process.
  • The Red Devils could be without first-choice right back Diogo Dalot and are expected not to have Donny van de Beek available, as he is suffering from a knee problem.

MAN CITY

  • Man City got back to winning ways in the Premier League after being held by Everton, beating Chelsea 0-1 at Stamford Bridge and reducing the gap between themselves and Arsenal to five points.
  • Ruben Dias is out injured and fellow centre-back John Stones is doubtful, meaning that either Manuel Akanji or Nathan Ake are likely to partner Aymeric Laporte in central defence.

THE PREDICTION

This particular Manchester derby brings a huge sense of intrigue with it, not least because Manchester Utd appear to have hit a sweet spot with Erik ten Hag at the helm. This is not the same side who were thrashed 6-3 at the Etihad Stadium last October. With the likes of Varane and Casemiro now having settled in and established themselves as key figures within the team, United have regained a winning mentality and inner steel that makes them very difficult to break down. If anyone can, it’s their local rivals who have won the last three Manchester derbies, racking up 12 goals in the process. But the hosts will have no doubt formulated a plan to try and cope with Erling Haaland and shouldn’t prove anywhere near as easy to break down as they were in the reverse fixture. With Manchester City no doubt aware of the offensive threat posed by an in-form Marcus Rashford to name just one United player, a strong defensive core will no doubt be at the forefront of Pep Guardiola’s mind. Expect a far less entertaining affair than what we saw last time these two clubs collided and backing under 2.5 goals to be scored looks a shrewd play.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
