THE LOWDOWN

ASTON VILLA

  • Aston Villa looked like they may have turned a corner in the aftermath of Steven Gerrard’s dismissal but that proved to be a false dawn as they were easily swatted aside by Newcastle last weekend. However, this represents Unai Emery’s first official match in charge of the club.
  • Emiliano Martinez is expected to be fine to play following his early withdrawal against Newcastle last weekend, while left-back Lucas Digne is a contender to come back into the starting XI.

MAN UTD

  • Man Utd are griding out the results at the moment and Erik ten Hag’s side have put together a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions ahead of this trip to the midlands, where another three points will be expected.
  • A combination of injury and suspension to attacking players may mean that Cristiano Ronaldo is required to start for a fourth game in succession, while Christian Eriksen could move further up the pitch to accommodate for Bruno Fernandes’ absence.

THE PREDICTION

It is difficult to predict what Aston Villa will turn up here after giving contrasting performances in their last two games, but they will surely be keen to impress Unai Emery in his first game in charge. They face a Man Utd side who have embarked on a run of positive results without ever really finding top gear, but the Red Devils could be significantly weakened in the attacking areas at Villa Park due to a combination of injury and suspension. Their attack could be somewhat blunted, and with Villa surely set to improve under the eyes of the new boss, a tight game featuring under 2.5 goals could be on the cards.

TIP: UNDER 2.5 GOALS
