THE LOWDOWN

ASTON VILLA

Aston Villa come into this one on the back of a long night in northern France as they edged past Lille in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League in midweek. They ended up sharing a 3-3 aggregate draw with the Ligue 1 outfit before a dramatic Emiliano Martinez-inspired penalty shootout victory.

That European victory followed on from the Villains pulling off an excellent performance and result at the Emirates Stadium as they defeated title challenging Arsenal by two goals to nil last weekend. Villa were the better side for a lot of the second-half before Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey clinched all three points for the top four chasers.

BOURNEMOUTH

Andoni Iraola and AFC Bournemouth will feel frustrated with last week’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United at the Vitality Stadium. The Cherries led twice in the first-half with goals from Dominic Solanke and Justin Kluivert either side of a Bruno Fernandes goal but the Portuguese international scored a second-half penalty to level things up for the Red Devils.

Bournemouth have been in much-improved form over the last month and a half or so, albeit against inferior opposition and a genuinely dreadful United side, as they try and stay in contention for a top seven or eight finish and potential European qualification. That draw means they have suffered just one loss in their last six matches.

THE TEAM NEWS

ASTON VILLA

Unai Emery did not give a traditional pre-match press conference so there are a few unknowns for this weekend but they do remain without several long-term absentees such as Tyrone Mings and Emi Buendia.

Jacob Ramsey is also sidelined until the end of this season alongside the likes of Boubacar Kamara and Alex Moreno with Nicolo Zaniolo also injured and Douglas Luiz out suspended.

PREDICTED XI (4-4-2): Martinez; Konsa, Carlos, Torres, Digne; Bailey, McGinn, Tielemans, Rogers; Watkins, Diaby

UNAVAILABLE: Mings (Injured), Alex Moreno (Injured), Kamara (Injured), Douglas Luiz (Suspended), Ramsey (Injured), Buendia (Injured), Zaniolo (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE:

BOURNEMOUTH

Andoni Iraola has confirmed that attacker Antoine Semenyo is available for Bournemouth after recovering from an illness that has swept through the Cherries' camp of late.

The south coast club will, though, remain without Luis Sinisterra with some suggestions the Colombian winger could miss the rest of the season. Marcus Tavernier is also unavailable due to injury.

PREDICTED XI (4-2-3-1): Neto; Smith, Zabarnyi, Senesi, Kerkez; Cook, Christie; Ouattara, Scott, Kluivert; Solanke

UNAVAILABLE: Fredericks (Injured), Tavernier (Injured), Sinisterra (Injured)

QUESTIONABLE: Mepham (Injured), Adams (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Due to poor English results in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, the likelihood is that the top five will not be enough for UEFA Champions League qualification. That means Aston Villa are in a real dogfight with Tottenham Hotspur for a top four spot. They have been underwhelming in the second-half of the campaign but have enjoyed some big wins of late. Bournemouth are in form, albeit their improvement has come against really poor teams. Iraola’s Cherries will go to Villa Park on the front foot but Villa do remain favourites for this one with their home advantage.

TIP: ASTON VILLA TO WIN & BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
