SINT-TRUIDEN
Sint-Truiden, under the management of former Bayern Munich midfielder Thorsten Fink who was appointed this summer, have started the 2022/23 Belgian Jupiler Pro League in impressive style with back-to-back victories. After narrowly missing out on the top eight and the UEFA Europa Conference League playoff places last year, STVV have started 2023/24 in a way whereby they will be aiming very much to make up for that.
The hosts have started with two 1-0 victories, firstly against one of the so-called ‘Big Three’ in Standard Liege and then away to likely relegation battlers Kortrijk last weekend. Both slender victories, which will be slight cause for concern that this isn’t necessarily a sustainable start. They have been boosted by the midweek arrival of Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who has turned down a move to Manchester United in order to play more regular football with Sint-Truiden.
ANDERLECHT
Mid-way through last season former Brentford assistant coach Brian Riemer was appointed head coach of Anderlecht. Performances improved under Riemer but the Brussels club struggled for consistency in their results as they finished the campaign in the bottom-half of the Belgian top-flight, despite reaching the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
The visitors began the 2023/24 campaign in similarly deflating fashion by losing 2-0 away to their city rivals Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on the opening day of the season. However, they come into this one in more buoyant mood as they enjoyed a surprise 1-0 win at home to Belgium’s reigning champions, Royal Antwerp, last weekend with their star summer signing, Denmark international striker Kasper Dolberg, notching the winner.

Thorsten Fink has preferred a 3-4-2-1 system so far this season and, given the fact they have a fully fit and available squad for this weekend’s round of fixtures as well as their impressive start to the season in terms of results, they are expected to be unchanged for this one.

Both of these teams will come into this one on the back of pleasing results last weekend. As mentioned, Sint-Truiden will be aiming for a top eight finish and they have made the best possible start but there will be concern about the slender margin of their victories. Anderlecht, on the other hand, may be tempted to simply write off their opening day loss at Union SG as their city rivals are expected to be title contenders. This one appears evenly matched at this early stage of the season and a draw, therefore, may be of good value.
