THE LOWDOWN

GENT

Under the management of Hein Vanhaezebrouck, Gent have one of the best sets of attackers in Europe, at least definitely in Belgium, with Hugo Cuypers and Gift Orban – and they are balancing Jupiler Pro League and UEFA Europa Conference League commitments very well. They begin the weekend sitting third in the table, seven points behind their upcoming opposition.

The home team come into this one on the back of a 1-1 draw with Anderlecht in another top-of-the-table clash a couple of weeks ago. They have suffered just two defeats in 23 matches across all competitions so far this season with just one loss coming in the Jupiler Pro League to Cercle Brugge last month.

UNION SAINT-GILLOISE

Royale Union Saint-Gilloise begin the weekend sitting at the top-of-the-table after an excellent start to the season in which they have managed 11 victories in their opening 14 league matches. Coached by former Genoa boss Alexander Blessin, Union SG hammered Kortrijk by three goals to nil before the November international break.

That was Union SG’s eighth successive league win since they suffered a 2-0 loss at home to Genk in mid-September, which was part of a poor run of form in which they managed just two victories across six games in all competitions. They have opened up a six-point lead to Brussels rivals, Anderlecht, at the top.

UNION SAINT-GILLOISE

Striker, Gustaf Nilsson, is a doubt for this weekend’s trip to Gent but Union SG could name an unchanged eleven for this weekend.

PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Moris; Sykes, Machida, Leysen; Terho, Vanhoutte, Rasmussen, Lapoussin; Amani, Puertas; Rodriguez

THE PREDICTION

Belgian football has gained a reputation for being entertaining for the neutral with over three goals per game a common occurrence in recent seasons. Gent will take the game to Union SG, despite the visitors leading the league and potentially moving ten points clear of the hosts with a victory this weekend. However, with the likes of Orban and Cuypers, there is only one way to go for Gent. Union SG will be confident they can exploit any space offered to them and a game in which both teams score seem likely.

BETTING TIP: BOTH TEAMS TO SCORE
