THE TEAM NEWS

SOUTHERN VIPERS

  • Southern Vipers did just enough to make sure of their spot at Finals Day with a game to spare although they will be disappointed that they could not achieve that feat with a win as they were beaten by Yorkshire Diamonds.
  • The Vipers qualified by virtue of the Diamonds not picking up a bonus point from that game although they would have fancied their chances of claiming a win having posted 184/4, their biggest total of this year’s tournament.
  • It was a collective effort to reach that score but the bowling unit did not do a good enough job of defending that huge total as the Diamonds met their target with the final ball of the innings and serious improvements with the ball are needed ahead of this clash.

LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING

  • Loughborough Lightning maintained their impressive run of form as they made it five wins in a row against bottom of the table Lancashire Thunder but it was the manner of that victory that will have most pleased everyone concerned.
  • It was a game Loughborough were expected to win but they did so in style as they bowled Lancashire out for 122 before making light work of their run chase as they achieved their target with 23 balls to spare.
  • England’s Amy Jones has not had the best of tournament’s after scoring 65 in the opening game but she could be coming into form at just the right time as her controlled 66* was the cornerstone of her side’s run chase.

THE PREDICTION

It will be interesting to see how both teams approach this game in what is a preview of the Women’s Super League semi-final. The two teams will meet again on Finals Day but must first do battle in their final group game. It was a nervy affair the last time they met with the Vipers edging the win with just three balls remaining but that was right at the start of the tournament and Loughborough’s good run of form could see them gain the upper hand before their semi-final clash.
