THE LOWDOWN
Somerset
- An impressive and dominant T20 Blast campaign for Somerset concluded with an excellent victory against top four chasing Kent Spitfires on Sunday. That 15-run win meant they finished the group stages with 24 points from a possible 28, finishing six clear of second-place Hampshire Hawks.
- There is a depth and excitement to their batting line-up with Tom Banton and Will Smeed opening up. A middle order of explosive all-rounders, such as Lewis Gregory, Ben Green and Craig Overton, allows for a lot of bowling options, too, where their two overseas men, Kiwi duo Matt Henry and Ish Sodhi, have performed well.
Notts Outlaws
- Over the last few years, the Notts Outlaws have had one of the better white ball sides, on paper, in the country. With Joe Clarke and Alex Hales opening up, the Outlaws know they can out score anyone ‘on their day’. A lack of firepower in the upper-middle-order has been an issue so far this season.
- They squeezed past a poor Leicestershire Foxes side with a four run win the other day but had won just one of their previous four matches in the Blast as they just about qualified for the quarter-finals.
THE PREDICTION
As is the case with all of the T20 Blast quarter-finals, the home team are the favourites but, bar Birmingham hosting Essex, this one does appear to be the most one-sided of the encounters. Somerset do not necessarily possess the star power of an Alex Hales, for example, but they are consistent from one to eleven and have both a lot of batting and bowling depth. Notts have flattered to deceive for a few years and a lack of Ben Duckett, due to his Ashes involvement, will be a further irritation. Somerset should win at Taunton.
