THE LOWDOWN
Lancashire Lightning
- After a tricky run of form mid-way through the group stages, as well as several underwhelming performances, Lancashire Lightning will be delighted and relieved to have got through to the quarter-finals for an extraordinary sixth successive season - they are yet to win it in those six years, though, with Lancs’ only T20 Blast triumph coming in 2015.
- A star-studded batting line-up with the likes of Phil Salt, Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone and Daryl Mitchell has lacked consistency throughout the campaign but all four have had innings that will worry any opponent in this competition.
Surrey
- Due to their financial status and depth of squad, Surrey’s consistent underperformance across all white-ball competitions has been fairly embarrassing in recent years. They haven’t won a T20 competition since 2003 and haven’t won a white-ball comp since 2011.
- This year, they will feel, should be different with the ability to field a minimum of seven international players in all 14 of their T20 Blast matches so far this season. They finished the group stages, though, with four defeats in their final five matches to fall out of the top two.
THE PREDICTION
These two met in the County Championship a few weeks ago with Lancashire Lightning defeating the reigning champions title favourites by 123 runs after blowing Surrey away for just 84 in the second innings. That should have little impact on this match, though, with the two red ball sides looking very different to their white ball units. Lancashire have been exceptional at home this season with no defeats at Blackpool, Manchester or Southport. Given that, their explosive top order and Surrey’s recent wobble, a home win seems the likeliest outcome.
