West Indies’ players have had to sit at home and watch the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup after failing to qualify for the competition, no doubt a painful experience. They’ll no doubt be delighted to get back out on the field for what may feel like a fresh start. In class Windies fashion though, there’s been significant drama pre-series in the form of Shane Dowrich’s international retirement, just ten days after being named in the squad for this match.
ENGLAND
On the back of arguably the worst World Cup campaign in their cricketing history, this feels like a very important series for England. Failure to convince will see further questions asked of captain Jos Buttler and head coach Matthew Mott. But it provides an opportunity for them to reset with a number of extremely talented young players picked looking to make a statement and establish themselves in a new-look team.
THE PREDICTION
England cannot afford a hangover following their pitiful World Cup defence. Plenty of those players involved in the sub-continent won’t feature here which should work to the tourists’ benefit with fresh faces and exuberance likely to have a positive impact on the team. West Indies have been poor in white ball cricket now for a significant period of time and England should prove too strong in this first game.
