THE TEAM NEWS
UNITED STATES
- United States will have been delighted with their performance against Ireland in the two-match T20i series, which ended in a 1-1 draw following Ireland’s nine-run victory in the second game.
- The big challenge now for the hosts is whether they can sustain their high levels of performance for a longer period with this contest 50 overs aside, with the United States likely to field the same players who served them so well in the T20 matches.
IRELAND
- Ireland had Lorcan Tucker to thank once again from a batting perspective in the second T20i after the number three batter scored 84 to help the tourists to what was ultimately a winnable total batting first, with the second highest score just 17 from Curtis Campher, who also took four wickets.
- The visitors will be hoping to have the likes of Gareth Delany and Harry Tector available for this ODI series after the two missed out in the T20i series having both tested positive for Covid-19.
THE PREDICTION
Ireland were at far from their best in the two T20i matches between these two nations, however playing a longer format of cricket is likely to work in their favour from an experience perspective. The tourists have already proven themselves to be a good 50 over side, even managing a drawn three-match series against South Africa back in July and will look to impose themselves on this contest with some big hitting at the top of the order, combined with disciplined bowling in a bid to force errors from the United States batters who will have not previously faced a Test playing nation in 50 over cricket on their own soil. Ultimately, Ireland should get the better of the United States in this first ODI.
*This ODI has since been cancelled after a match official tested positive for Covid-19. The second and third ODIs are scheduled to go ahead as planned with new match officials.
