THE LOWDOWN
Birmingham Bears
- Arguably the most in-form all format batter in county cricket this season, Sam Hain, made an early welcome return from injury to the Bears’ batting line-up in their final group game at the weekend at home to Durham. He will be crucial in guiding the hosts through to a home finals day.
- Birmingham notched an eight-run victory at Edgbaston in that match to complete an excellent group stage in which they collected 22 points from a possible 28.
Essex Eagles
- The Essex Eagles qualified for the quarter-finals of the Blast in fourth place in the south group after a dramatic final ball win at The Oval against Surrey in which Feroze Khushi struck a six to take the two points for his side.
- There has been and will continue to be a reliance on batter, Dan Lawrence, with the Englishman hitting 58 in that aforementioned win to continue his fine form. Having been omitted from England XI for the third Ashes Test at Headingley, Lawrence has been confirmed as being in the Essex squad for the trip north to the West Midlands.
THE PREDICTION
The Birmingham Bears have been phenomenal throughout the 2023 T20 Blast campaign, especially utilising their home advantage at Edgbaston. With quite dry and slow pitches in Birmingham, they have used spin very well with the likes of Jake Lintott, Danny Briggs, Glenn Maxwell and Dan Mousley all proving crucial. Essex were knocked out at this stage by Lancashire Lightning last season and another last eight exit would seem most likely, even with Dan Lawrence’s availability and the likes of Simon Harmer and Matt Critchley likely to be useful on the Edgbaston surface. A home win is the expected outcome.
