YOSHIHITO NISHIOKA

  • Yoshihito Nishioka beat the USA’s Mackenzie McDonald in five sets on Tuesday to progress and set up his second encounter of the year with Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro.
  • The 23-year-old then went on to play and progress past McDonald again, this time in doubles on Wednesday alongside his partner Ricardas Berankis, and Nishioka represents an unorthodox player at 5”7 and left-handed.
  • Nishioka came off the loser in his first meeting with Del Potro earlier this year at Delray Beach in Florida (6-3, 7-5).

JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO

  • It turned out to be a test for Juan Martin del Potro against Nicolas Jarry in the first round as the Chilean took the first set, but del Potro rallied to rattle off the next three and win.
  • Del Potro has been knocked out of his last five French Open appearances by members of the last decade’s “Top Four” (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray) but has not failed to reach the third round in that time.
  • The Argentine beat his next opponent Yoshihito Nishioka at Delray Beach earlier this year before losing to Nishioka’s Roland-Garros first-round victim Mackenzie McDonald in the quarter-finals.

THE PREDICTION

This match promises to be a vastly interesting contest between 6”6 powerhouse Juan Martin del Potro and 5”7 southpaw Yoshihito Nishioka. One would imagine it comes down to speed versus strength, but of course the Argentine’s experience cannot be ignored and, while Nishioka might win favour through his diminutive stature, it will surely be Delpo’s day.
