- It was another routine victory for Carreno Busta in the second round as he outclassed 21st seed Alex de Minaur in three sets 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.
- The Spaniard's clay-court form was torrid coming into the French Open having lost all five matches on the surface in 2019 but he has looked a different player in the early part of the week.
- The 27-year-old's career best at Roland-Garros is a quarter-final appearance in 2017 but if he is to have a similar run here he will need to halt a three-match losing streak against Paire.
BENOIT PAIRE
- Benoit Paire almost blew away a two-set lead in his second-round match with compatriot Pierre-Hugues Herbert before eventually clinching the decider 11-9 in a match that lasted over four-and-a-half hours.
- This will be the Frenchman's third appearance at this stage of the French Open and he will be seeking to get past this hurdle for the first time having lost at the third-round stage to Kei Nishikori in 2013 and Tomas Berdych in 2015.
- Paire leads Carreno Busta by six matches to three when it comes to career meetings with his most recent win over the Spaniard coming just last month in Barcelona.
THE PREDICTION
Pablo Carreno Busta was not a man in form coming into the French Open but clay is regarded as his best surface and he has shown that in his pair of routine wins so far. Conversely, Paire has had to do things the hard way and contested the longest match of the tournament in the second round. Carreno Busta will seek to force Paire into a baseline battle which should eventually take its toll, and despite Paire having the edge in recent meetings, it is the Spaniard who has been more consistent this week and should advance to the fourth round.
