NOVAK DJOKOVIC

  • Novak Djokovic has made fairly routine progress so far and is yet to drop a set after three rounds as he seeks his second French Open title.
  • The Serb's 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory over world number 147 Salvatore Caruso in the third round was a much sterner test than the scoreline suggested but this will serve him in good stead for the rest of the tournament.
  • The world number one has only faced Struff once before - a 2017 hard court meeting in Doha - so this will be their first battle on clay.

JAN-LENNARD STRUFF

  • Struff is through to his first singles Grand Slam quarter-final at the age of 29 and had to do it the hard way after outlasting Borna Coric in an epic five-setter 4-6, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6, 11-9.
  • The German has made a habit of beating players ranked higher than him this year and he can count Marin CIlic, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas among his 2019 victims.
  • Struff is a fan of the clay, with his powerful groundstrokes well-suited to the surface, but he should expect to see plenty of balls coming back at him with interest against Djokovic so patience will be key for him if he is to compete for the duration of the match.

THE PREDICTION

Struff is one of those who has matured late in his career but there is an increasing trend of players really hitting their stride in their late 20s/early 30s. The German has shown plenty of battling qualities at Roland-Garros so far and he certainly has the game to test Djokovic, but over the long format you would expect the world number one to continue his progress. Struff could the first to take a set off the Serb at this year's French Open, but that is likely to be as good as it gets as fatigue could set in as the match progresses.
