JORDAN THOMPSON
- Jordan Thompson beat young Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his first-round match before seeing off behemoth Ivo Karlovic in four sets in the second.
- The Aussie’s victory over Karlovic may well equate to his best win of the year so far and good practice ahead of his third-round opponent Juan Martin del Potro, dwarfed at 6”6 by the 6”11 Croat.
- At 25 years old, Thompson has reached his highest stage at Roland-Garros in four attempts, and this is indeed his first third-round appearance at any Grand Slam.
JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO
- It turned out to be a spectacle after all between Juan Martin del Potro and his 5”7 Japanese opponent Yoshihito Nishioka, who won the first set and the fourth before the Argentine rallied to win.
- This was Del Potro’s second successive match at Roland-Garros in which he lost the first set and he must focus on starting at full potential if he wants to progress much further.
- However, Delpo’s previous four wins this season have come in straight sets and so his coaching team will be pleased he is showing match fitness in longer ordeals.
THE PREDICTION
Juan Martin del Potro is still only 30 years old, a fact many forget after his years of injury strife, but his biggest enemy on the court has always been his body. For this reason, Delpo’s four and five-set victories so far offer as much as positive as negatives for his camp. If his fitness holds up, he can emulate his performance at Roland-Garros last year where he reached the semi-final. Jordan Thompson should offer some resistance, especially having a full match’s practice against big-hitting Karlovic, but ultimately the Aussie might be Del Potro’s weakest foe so far this tournament.
