- Fourth seed and outside favourite Dominic Thiem has not had it all his own way so far at Roland-Garros after he played out another four-set slog with Alexander Bublik.
- The 25-year-old has won Indian Wells and the Barcelona Open this year, but first-opportunity exits at Qatar, Rio, Miami and Rome last time out do highlight a big inconsistency in his performances.
- Barring a four-set victory for his third-round opponent Pablo Cuevas back in 2015, Dominic Thiem has won the three more recent matches between them on clay, including the Buenos Aires quarter-final this year.
PABLO CUEVAS
- Pablo Cuevas was two sets up and in control in his second-round match before British number one Kyle Edmund retired with a recurring knee injury.
- The Uruguayan will now face Austria’s Dominic Thiem with it difficult to say which player will have the more fatigue as Cuevas is also playing doubles with Feliciano Lopez.
- The 33-year-old is matching his best showing at Roland-Garros with three third-round stages reached in nine appearances at the Grand Slam.
THE PREDICTION
These players share a 3-2 head-to-head record, Cuevas the worse off with an outlying 2015 clay victory and a hard court win at Indian Wells last year. Over the years, Dominic Thiem has been able to express himself on clay more than any other surface and is in pole position to succeed Rafael Nadal, and indeed Novak Djokovic, as the man to beat on red. This match should be more difficult than his first two, however, and we could be looking at another four if not five-set challenge.
