DOMINIC THIEM
- World number four Dominic Thiem was troubled slightly by the USA’s Tommy Paul but ultimately progressed to the second round in a four-set victory.
- The Austrian is many fans’ dark horse for the French Open title behind the elite Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic as he has become something of a clay specialist over the years.
- Thiem lost the final of last year’s Roland-Garros to Nadal, and in fact has exited at the hands of either Nadal or Djokovic in four of his five appearances at the tournament.
ALEXANDER BUBLIK
- 21-year-old Alexander Bublik got past Rudolf Molleker in four sets to set up the biggest match of his young career in the second round of Roland-Garros.
- The Kazakh reached a career-high ATP ranking of 90 last week before falling back one place to 91 and his three Challenger titles this year show he is moving in the right direction.
- A win here will represent Bublik’s best showing at a Grand Slam to date after he reached the second round of the Australian Open back in 2017 and this will be his first meeting with Dominic Thiem.
THE PREDICTION
Dominic Thiem may feel like his time to shine, especially in the clay-court season, is on its way as his main rivals Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal get older, and his reaching of the finals last year should be his target here. He faces Alexander Bublik for the first time in his career and could be troubled by the young Kazakh, who looks to be on his way to being a top 50 player at least. Thiem should ultimately prevail fairly comfortably though in his quest to go one better this year.
