THE TEAM NEWS

SWITZERLAND

  • Switzerland lost their first game of the 2019 IIHF World Championships as they were narrowly defeated by reigning back-to-back champions Sweden but should still progress to the quarter-finals.

  • The hard-fought encounter with Sweden was a thriller but the Swiss were unable to hit back when the Swedes went ahead with just over eight minutes remaining and succumbed to a 4-3 defeat.

  • Switzerland conceded double the amount of goals against Sweden that they had conceded in the full tournament and now facing unbeaten Russia, their defence will be tested once again.

RUSSIA

  • Russia maintained the only 100% record in the tournament as they were winners over Latvia although it wasn’t the best performance by the Russians and they will need to improve in this contest.

  • Latvia performed well but Russia had too much in the 3-1 win as they overcame a 1-0 first period deficit before scoring three goals in the second to seal the victory and are in pole position to progress to the quarter-finals as group winners.

  • Russia conceded just their third goal of the tournament in the win over Latvia and will hope their mean defence can stand firm in their final two games to ensure they preserve their unbeaten record.

THE PREDICTION

The two best defences in the tournament face off in what shapes to be a superb contest. Russia are yet to taste defeat after a solid campaign so far with Switzerland only losing once with that coming in their last encounter against reigning champions Sweden. Switzerland showed in that game that they can compete with the best but Russia will make things very difficult for them and can edge this one.
