The Lowdown

FIJI

• Fiji come into this World Cup with lofty expectations to at least replicate the semi-final appearance they managed in 2013 and they will need to win here and top the group to progress.
• Coach Mick Potter has been dealt a blow by the news that Korbin Sims' broken arm has not healed in time and despite naming him in the starting team, he will not feature in this opening match.
• With Jarryd Hayne pulling the strings, Fiji possess plenty of pace and power in their ranks and will be looking to make a fast start and rack up the points against the States.

• Fresh off a Grand Final triumph with the Leeds Rhinos, coach Brian McDermott leads the States in what is their second appearance at the World Cup after they made their debuts in 2013.
• London Broncos' Mark Offendahl will lead the team on the pitch and he is one of their most experienced players so he will be vital in what is a tough opening game for them.
• The States managed to win two of their group stage matches back in 2013 against the Cook Islands and Wales so they will have some confidence that they can improve further here.

Analysis - what to expect
There is plenty of home-grown talent in the American squad but they face a tough opponent in Fiji to kick off the tournament. Fiji have Jarryd Hayne in their ranks and plenty more quality and experience so they should win this comfortably. Their brand of play will make it entertaining to watch and potentially high scoring, with the Americans unlikely to be able to contain their pace and power.
