Wolfsburg kick off inside the bottom two with just a point from their last four games, whilst Werder Bremen have gained six from their last three.

Wolfsburg preview: Digging in

Wolfsburg had to dig in hard last weekend and whilst it’s wins that they so desperately need, to come away from Sinsheim with a point against Champions League chasing Hoffenheim warrants serious credit when considering the attacking quality of Christian Ilzer’s side. It gives Dieter Hecking a foundation in which to build from.

However, the reality is that Wolfsburg are without a win in their last nine league matches and their extended slump has left them floundering inside the automatic relegation places. At home here against another struggling team, Hecking needs to find a way to mastermind a victory.

Werder Bremen preview: Back down to earth

After reeling off consecutive wins to pull clear of Wolfsburg, Werder Bremen were dragged back into trouble by losing 0-2 to Mainz, allowing Wolfsburg to gain a point on them, meaning the gap between the two clubs currently stands at four points heading into this encounter.

The attacking potency that had proven the pillar of Werder’s upturn disappeared as Mainz put in an excellent away performance, silencing the fans in Bremen early on with an early goal before completely snuffing out the Werder offensive threat.

Wolfsburg team news: Six ruled out

Wolfsburg are expected to be without six players for the visit of Werder Bremen, with Dardai, Fischer, Paredes and Rogerio among those ruled out of contention.

Predicted XI: (3-4-3): Grabara; Belocian, Jenz, Koulierakis; Kumbedi, Eriksen, Vinicius, Maehle; Lindstrom, Pejcinovic, Amoura

Unavailable: Cleiton (Injured), Dardai (Injured), Fischer (Injured), Paredes (Injured), Rogerio (Injured), Seelt (Injured)

Questionable:

Werder Bremen team news: Wait on Stark

Stark likely faces a late fitness test to determine his involvement for Werder Bremen, who are missing Stage due to suspension along with both Lynen and Weiser through injury.

Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Backhaus; Sugawara, Coulibaly, Friedl, Deman; Bittencourt, Puertas; Njinmah, Covic, Schmid; Grull

Unavailable: Boniface (Injured), Hein (Injured), Lynen (Injured), Malatini (Injured), Milosevic (Injured), Pieper (Injured), Stage (Suspended), Weiser (Injured), Wober (Injured)

Questionable: Stark (Injured)

Wolfsburg vs Werder Bremen prediction

Neither of these two clubs can afford to lose when taking into account the ramifications at this stage of the season. Every point is vital and three would be golden. Defence isn’t the strong point for either team, so it would be no surprise to see an end-to-end battle over the course of 90 minutes with chances on both sides.

Only Heidenheim have conceded more goals than Wolfsburg this season in the Bundesliga, whilst the Werder Bremen backline have shipped 47 goals themselves. With five of the hosts’ last six matches having seen both teams score, the same outcome has to be favoured between Werder and Wolfsburg, regardless of the final result.
