Wolfsburg and St Pauli kick off Wednesday’s slate of Bundesliga fixtures.

Wolfsburg preview: Responding to adversity

Wolfsburg may still be recovering from the shock of being mauled at the hands of Bayern Munich this past weekend. An 8-1 battering by the Bundesliga leaders at the Allianz Arena will have hurt no doubt, but the best thing Wolfsburg can do is treat that game as a standalone fixture as they won’t be playing teams of Bayern’s quality every week.

The biggest casualty of such a large defeat is the Wolfsburg goal difference, which has obviously taken a huge hit. They currently sit above the bottom three but have lost their previously comfortable goal difference cushion compared to those below them.

St. Pauli preview: False start

St. Pauli didn’t get the opportunity to resume their season at the weekend after their game was postponed due to snow. Results see them come into this midweek round of fixtures inside the bottom three, so the pressure is on Alexander Blessin’s side ahead of this encounter.

The visitors haven’t lost in their last three league games, a platform for them to build on in 2026. Victory over fellow strugglers Heidenheim was sandwiched between draws against FC Cologne and Mainz respectively.

Wolfsburg team news: Amoura back

Having returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, Mohamed Amoura is available for Wolfsburg but unlikely to be risked so soon after an international tournament. Dardai, Maehle and Wind are among those injured.

Predicted XI: (4-2-3-1): Grabara; Kumbedi, Jenz, Koulierakis, Zehnter; Gerhardt, Arnold; Majer, Eriksen, Wimmer; Pejcinovic

Unavailable: Dardai (Injured), Maehle (Injured), Rogerio (Injured), Seelt (Illness), Wind (Injured)

Questionable: Amoura (Fitness), Muller (Injured)

St. Pauli team news: Five out

St. Pauli are expected to be missing five players for this game, including midfielder Jackson Irvine and attacker Daniel Sinani. Nemeth will also miss out for the visitors.

Predicted XI: (3-5-2): Vasilj; Wahl, Smith, Mets; Pyrka, Fujita, Sands, Metcalfe, Oppie; Afolayan, Pereira Lage

Unavailable: Hountondji (Injured), Irvine (Injured), Nemeth (Injured), Sinani (Injured), Spari (Injured)

Questionable:

Wolfsburg vs St. Pauli prediction

Wolfsburg should come out with a real fire in their belly after what happened at Bayern and St. Pauli will need to prepare themselves for a backlash. Defensively though, the visiting side showed a lot of positive signs prior to the winter break and they won’t be easy to break down, so Wolfsburg could well find themselves frustrated.

This is likely to be a contest dominated by the hosts, although St. Pauli should pose a notable threat on the counter-attack. However, goals may wind up hard to come by and backing under 2.5 of them over the course of 90 minutes looks a shrewd play.

Wolfsburg vs St. Pauli tip: Under 2.5 goals
