Such a result will have done wonders for the confidence of their squad, which had no doubt been struggling under the pressure of being down the wrong end of the table.
That makes this a really tough encounter for Newcastle Jets, who are coming off the back of two straight wins, but could find themselves frustrated in the same way that Melbourne were when pressing forwards.
