Key stats

  • Uruguay have lost only two of their previous 21 World Cup qualifying matches against Venezuela (W11 D8). They are unbeaten in the ten most recent (W4 D6), since a 0- 3 home defeat in March 2004.
  • Uruguay have won only one of their last nine World Cup qualifying matches (D5 L3).
  • Uruguay have failed to score in seven of their last nine World Cup qualifying matches.
  • Venezuela have won their last two World Cup qualifying matches without conceding a goal.
  • Venezuela are aiming to win three successive World Cup qualifying matches for the first time since the campaign for the 2006 finals.

Uruguay vs Venezuela prediction

Uruguay are pretty much assured of a place at the World Cup next year but victory here against Venezuela will pretty much seal their spot.

It has been a solid qualifying campaign without being spectacular with the increase in places leading to a more comfortable route for them. They will want to get the job done here though and not open the door further to Venezuela who currently occupy the play-off place.

The vinotinto produced a strong performance to overcome Bolivia on Friday night to cement their seventh position in the table. That is good enough for a play-off next March to reach the World Cup which would be a remarkable effort for the nation that has yet to make to a final tournament.

They may approach this match a little more circumspect than they did against Bolivia as they may be focused on not losing rather than trying to gain ground on those above which is unlikely. That could well lead to a somewhat uninspiring encounter and we expect a match with few goals.

Uruguay vs Venezuela tip: Under 2.5 total goals
